As a health professional, helping patients kick the habit of smoking/vaping can be an arduous journey. This presentation will put forward the work experience of a mental health nurse practitioner working with this very issue in a population of individuals suffering from psychotic disorders. First, the impact of mental health stigma and unconscious bias on the thought process of health care practitioners will be presented. Then, the main techniques recognized by scientific evidence to motivate patients in smoking cessation and the possible repercussions of this cessation in terms of interaction between smoking and psychotropic drugs will be briefly reviewed. Finally, the biophysiological particularities behind smoking in individuals suffering from psychotic disorders will be discussed.
