There was a large soft tissue mass occupying the anterior mediastinum, displacing and compressing lungs posteriorly. The heart could be identified separate from the mass. There was marked increase in the AP diameter of the chest.

An enhanced CT scan (PRESENTED BELOW) confirmed the large mixed attenuation mass occupying the anterior mediastinum, surrounding and enveloping the heart.

ENLARGE the CT scan.

The bulk of this mass was of fat density, with numerous areas of soft tissue extending throughout it. No calcifications were seen.

An echocardiogram showed normal anatomy and a slight compression of right atrium by the mass.
