Pediatric Tuberculosis in Canada
The number of reported TB cases in children <15 years of age declined from 430 in 1970 to 109 in 2001, an average annual decline of 4%. The incidence of TB disease among children has also decreased from 6.6 per 100,000 in 1970 to 1.9 per 100,000 in 2001. There was an increase in the number of cases for the period 1989 to 1999 mostly attributable to cases diagnosed in the Canadian-born Aboriginal population. (Figure 1)

From 1970 to 2001 45% of TB in children occurred in the <5 year category. Younger children were more likely to present with meningeal, miliary or primary TB, whereas older children more frequently present with other non-pulmonary sites and respiratory TB.(figure 2)
