After years of incremental progress towards more patient-friendly models of care that leverage technology, the silver lining of the COVID-19 pandemic has been to act as a catalyst for accelerating uptake of digital healthcare technologies. Virtual care has been adopted in respiratory medicine, and limitations in pulmonary function testing capacity have accelerated the adoption of home-based lung function monitoring technologies. In this talk, we will discuss emerging strategies for virtual management of the respiratory patient, with a focus on airways diseases. This will include technologies for remote lung function monitoring and the role of mobile health apps, smart devices and wearables for disease monitoring and rehabilitation.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Distinguish the categories of virtual care technologies for respiratory medicine;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of mobile health technologies for asthma and COPD; and
  • Discuss the challenges facing virtual care technologies in respiratory medicine.
