Chronic aspiration can lead to significant pulmonary morbidity. Children with a history of prematurity, aerodigestive tract anomalies, neurodevelopmental disorders and craniofacial syndromes are at increased risk of dysphagia and aspiration. The role of the pediatric respirologist in the multidisciplinary assessment and management of aspiration will be discussed and the value of an aerodigestive team approach will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the presentation and risk factors for chronic pulmonary aspiration; and
  • Consider the benefits of a multidisciplinary aerodigestive team approach in the assessment and management of chronic pulmonary aspiration.
