Removal of a pulmonary fungus ball using bronchoscopic techniques has many potential advantages over surgical resection. However, pulmonary fungus balls are often complex. They can be associated with chronic necrotizing aspergillosis, airway inflammation and obstruction that can preclude optimal results from bronchoscopy. Medical management plays a major role in the management of these patients. In this presentation, medical management will be presented in the context of a number of clinical cases.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Diagnose a pulmonary fungus ball and understand the complications and associated conditions;
  • Know when and how to implement and monitor peri-bronchoscopic medical therapy; and
  • Know how to monitor patients after bronchoscopic removal of the fungus ball.
