This will be a case presentation of a young infant with significant respiratory distress secondary to congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) who was managed with a non-operative (NOP) approach. The case presentation will be followed with the results of a recent study assessing the outcomes for the non-operative approach to the care of symptomatic CLE infants, including their short- and long-term outcomes in comparison to surgically resected cases.

At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  • Understand the definition and typical clinical presentation of congenital lobar emphysema (CLE);
  • Review the management options for CLE; and
  • Assess the effectiveness of the conservative approach in symptomatic CLE.
